The Krenitzin Islands ( Russian Острова Креницына ) are a group of small islands in the eastern part of the Fox Islands in the eastern Aleutian Islands in Alaska ( USA ). The Krenitzins lie between Unalaska in the southwest and Unimak in the northeast. Named islands in this group include Aiktak , Akutan , Akun , Avatanak , Derbin , Kaligagan , Rootok , Round , Tigalda and Ugamak as well as the islands of the Avatanak Strait Islands . All of these islands are part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge . The Krenitzins have a total land area of 159.533 km² and are uninhabited.
The Krenitzin Islands were probably named in 1852 by Captain Mikhail Dmitrijewitsch Tebenkow (1802–1872) after the sea captain Pyotr Kuzmich Krenitsyn (1728–1770), who with Mikhail Dmitrijewitsch Levaschow (1739–1775) in 1768 and 1769 over 30 Aleutian islands, including the Krenitzins Islands , as well as Unimak and the Alaska Peninsula has explored and mapped.
