Mikhail Dmitrievich Tebenkov
Mikhail Dmitrievich Tebenkov ( Russian Михаил Дмитриевич Тебеньков * 1802 , † 3. April 1872 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian hydrographer , Vice Admiral of the Imperial Russian Navy and 1845-1850 director of the Russian-American Company and Governor of Russian America .
He explored and mapped the then largely unexplored coast of Alaska . His work Atlas of the Northwest Coasts of America: from Bering Strait to Cape Corrientes and the Aleutian Islands was published in 1852. The 39 maps contained therein show the North American coastline from the Bering Strait to California .
In addition to the Tebenkow Bay in the Alexander Archipelago , other geographical objects such as the Tebenkow Glacier or Mount Tebenkow are named after him.
