Shemya Island is the easternmost and largest of the Semichi Islands , a subgroup of the Near Islands in the far west of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska . Shemya Island is separated from Nizki Island in the west by the Shemya Pass with the islets Hammerhead Island and Lotus Island and is located about 1,900 km southwest of Anchorage . The island's land area is 15.289 km². According to the 2000 census, there were officially 27 people on the island.
history
The Russian ship Sankt Peter und Paul was shipwrecked here in 1762, and most of the crew survived.
Since 1943 there are on Shemya the airbase Eareckson Air Station , originally Shemya Army Air Base called, with a 3 km long runway. The main tasks of the air force base are radar , surveillance , weather observation and the refueling of aircraft.
