Totolapa is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has 6375 inhabitants and an area of 169.1 km². The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is the Totolapa of the same name .

The name Totolapa comes from Nahuatl and means "river of birds".

The municipality of Totolapa is located in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 400 m and 2500 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 47% silty sandstone with 27% conglomerate rock , 9% limestone , 8% tuff and 7% alluvium ; The predominant soil types are the Phaeozem (30%), Luvisol (27%) and Regosol (26%). A good 51% of the community area is used for arable farming, 42% is forested, and 5% is used as pasture land.

The Municipio Totolapa borders on the Municipios Teopisca , San Cristóbal de las Casas , Chiapilla , San Lucas , Acala , Venustiano Carranza and Nicolás Ruiz .

In the 2010 census, 6375 people were counted in 1358 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 321 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 286 speakers of the Tzotzil . Almost 30 percent of the population were illiterate. 1967 residents were registered as economically active, of whom 94% were men and 0.4% were unemployed. 55% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
