Amatenango de la Frontera is a municipality in the southeast of the Mexican state Chiapas . It has about 30,000 inhabitants and is 254.4 km² in size. The administrative seat is the Amatenango de la Frontera of the same name , while the largest place in the municipality is El Pacayal .
The name Amatenango comes from Nahuatl and means fortification made of Amatl trees , the Spanish addition Frontera refers to the Mexican-Guatemalan border.

The municipality Amatenango de la Frontera is located in the southeast of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 600 m and 2400 m . It lies entirely in the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined to 49% by sandstone - limonite with 43% limestone ; The predominant soil types are Phaeozem (32%), Acrisol (31%) and Regosol (18%). About 73% of the community area is forested, about 20% is used for agriculture.

The 2010 census counted 29,547 people in 6,355 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 911 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , of which 586 were speakers of Mam and 236 speakers of Yakaltek . About 21 percent of the population was illiterate. 8,764 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 90% were men and 1% were unemployed. 39% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
