Sitalá is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 12,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​105.8 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Sitalá of the same name .

The name Sitalá is a Hispanic version of Xitalhá and means "paddle of the father of fear".

geography

The municipality of Sitalá is located in the north-central part of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 400  m and 1800  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 47% sandstone - lutite with 40% limestone and 9% breccias ; the predominant soil types are the Luvisol (74%) and Phaeozem (26%). Almost 80% of the community area is forested, 19% is used for arable farming.

The Municipios Sitalá borders on the Municipios Chilón , San Juan Cancuc and Pantelhó .

The 2010 census counted 12,269 people in 2,299 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 10,588 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 9,849 speakers from the Tzeltal . A good 46 percent of the population were illiterate. 2,971 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of whom over 95% were men or 1.8% were unemployed. Almost 75% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
