Tapilula is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 12,000 inhabitants and is 42.7 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest town is the Tapilula of the same name .

The name Tapilula , derived from Nahuatl , means "place where the death penalty is customary" or "place of the hanged".

geography

The municipality Tapilula is located in the northwest of the Mexican state Chiapas between 400  m and 2200  m altitude. It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and belongs entirely to the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . 96% of the geology of the municipality is determined by limestone ; The predominant soil types are Luvisol (57%) and Leptosol (41%). 43% of the community area is used as pastureland, 28% is used for agriculture, 25% is forested.

Tapilula borders the municipalities of Ixhuatán , Rincón Chamula San Pedro , Rayón and Pantepec .

In the 2010 census, 12,170 people were counted in 2,783 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 958 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 849 speakers of the Zoque . Almost 18 percent of the population were illiterate. 4,064 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 78% were men and 2.2% were unemployed. Almost 27% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
