Tonalá is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has 84,594 inhabitants and an area of ​​1858.9 km². The administrative seat and largest of the more than 500 places in the municipality is Tonalá of the same name .

The name Tonalá comes from Nahuatl and means "hot place".

There are two nature reserves in the municipality, namely Playa de Puerto Arista and parts of the La Sepultura biosphere reserve .

The municipality of Tonalá is located in the southwest of the Mexican state Chiapas between sea level and 2500  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and is more than 99% in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas and 0.64% in the Grijalva - Usumacinta region . The geology of the municipality is determined to 30% by alluvions with 27% granite and 12% granodiorite ; The predominant soil types are Leptosol (22%), Regosol (21%), Cambisol (16%) and Luvisol (8%). Almost 40% of the community area is used as pastureland, 29% is forested, 7% is occupied by mangroves, 6% is used for arable farming.

The Municipio Tonalá borders the Municipios Villa Corzo , Arriaga , Villaflores and Pijijiapan as well as the state of Oaxaca and the Pacific .

In the 2010 census, 84,594 people in 21,788 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 284 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 108 speakers of Zapotec . A good 12 percent of the population were illiterate. 31,296 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which just under 74% were men and 3% were unemployed. 26% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
