Ixtapa is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 24,500 inhabitants and an area of 280 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the eponymous Ixtapa .
The name Ixtapa comes from Nahuatl and means “place of salted water”.
geography
The municipality of Ixtapa is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas at altitudes between 700 m and 2100 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined to 44% by sandstone - conglomerate with 29% sandstone- lutite and 23% limestone , the predominant soil types are the Regosol (58%), Leptosol (21%), Luvisol (12%) and Phaeozem (9%) ). About 68% of the community area is forested, 21% is used for agriculture, 11% is used for pasture land.
The municipality of Ixtapa and borders with the municipalities of Soyaló , Bochil , Larráinzar , Chamula , Zinacantán and Chiapa de Corzo .

In the 2010 census, 24,517 people in 4,965 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 4,971 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 4,690 speakers of the Tzotzil . Over 18 percent of the population was illiterate. 7,631 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which just under 88% were men and 1.9% were unemployed. A good 45% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
