Teopisca is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 38,000 inhabitants and an area of 284.4 km². The administrative seat and largest town of the municipality is Teopisca of the same name .

geography

The municipality of Teopisca is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas at altitudes between 800 m and 2700 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 78% limestone with 13% tuff ; The predominant soil types are Luvisol (47%), Alisol (26%) and Leptosol (19%). About 68% of the community area is forested, 19% is used for arable farming, 11% is used for pasture land.

The municipality of Teopisca borders on the municipalities of Amatenango del Valle , Huixtán , San Cristóbal de las Casas , Totolapa and Venustiano Carranza .

The 2010 census counted 37,607 people in 7,915 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 7,772 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 3,861 speakers of the Zoque and 3,292 speakers of the Tzotzil . A good 30 percent of the population was illiterate. 12,131 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 82% were men and 2.3% were unemployed. Almost 48% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
