The Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont , or ICP for short , is a private foundation established in November 2006 by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Autonomous University of Barcelona , dedicated to the paleontological research of the vertebrates and primates of Catalonia . It has a double seat on the one hand on the campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and on the other hand in the center of Sabadell near Barcelona. The institute continues and realigns the work of the Institut de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont , founded in 1969 . In addition to basic palaeontological research and the conservation and scientific processing of Catalan finds, the ICP distributes practical and theoretical knowledge on paleontology throughout Catalonia. For this purpose, a pedagogically oriented paleontology museum is attached to the institute at its headquarters in Sabadell. The institute is named after the Catalan paleontologist Miquel Crusafont i Pairó .

Scientific and public work

The ICP is of the opinion that paleontology, as a science between biology and geology, makes fundamental contributions to the theory of evolution with a clear thrust towards paleobiology. It's not just about generating and presenting knowledge about dinosaurs, mammals or the ancestors of humans a few million years ago. In addition to excavations, taxonomy and description of the finds - the actual palaeontological basic work - new palaeontological research work and methods such as virtual paleontology are confocal , non-invasive, three-dimensional imaging processes of computer, magnetic resonance and neutron tomography. In terms of this understanding of paleontology, the ICP claims to be the reference center for Catalonia. It offers support to all institutions that ask for advice in this field.

In addition, the ICP sees itself as an advice center for the cultural significance of paleontology. The explanation and communication of the meaning of the finds has the same meaning for the ICP as starting new excavation projects. The ICP provides interested persons with knowledge of the material and conceptual tools of paleontology. The ICP does this not only with the museum integrated in the institute, but also with courses held throughout Catalonia in cooperation with other organizations.

museum

It is particularly important to the ICP to come into contact with young people in new ways on the subject of paleontology and evolution. The motivation and ambition of the young are the future of the institute. The museum integrated into the ICP therefore makes various activities in the field of paleontology transparent for children and young people. In addition to the excavation work, it also shows, for example, how to publish an article in a scientific journal. In the museum itself, a skull replica of the Miocene primate Pierolapithecus catalaunicus as well as living reconstructions of the same and of Dryopithecus laietanus are on display.
