Berriozábal is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . It has about 43,000 inhabitants and an area of 353.2 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the city of the same name Berriozábal .
The name is dedicated to the liberalist Felipe Berriozábal . The municipality is part of the Zona Metropolitana de Tuxtla Gutiérrez .
geography
The municipality of Berriozábal is located in the west of the Mexican state of Chiapas at heights between 100 m and 1300 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 51% limestone - lutite with 25% sandstone - lutite and 24% limestone; The predominant soil types are Leptosol (38%), Alisol (24%) and Luvisol (18%). About 52% of the community area is forested, 33% is used as pasture land and 13% is used for agriculture.
The municipality of Berriozábal borders the municipalities of Tecpatán , Copainalá , Tuxtla Gutiérrez , San Fernando and Ocozocoautla de Espinosa .

Of these, 1,590 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , of which 1,257 were Tzotzil speakers . About 17 percent of the population was illiterate. 15,565 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which almost 77% were men and 2.3% were unemployed. A good 29% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
