San Juan Cancuc is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 29,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​173.62 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the eponymous San Juan Cancuc .

The name Cancuc comes from Nahuatl and means Quetzal's star ; San Juan is the Spanish equivalent of St. John .

geography

The municipality of San Juan Cancuc is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas at heights between 400  m and 2300  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 45% limestone with 39% sandstone - lutite and 15% silty sandstone; The predominant soil types are the Phaeozem (29%), Luvisol (25%), Leptosol (24%) and Alisol (22%). About 55% of the community area is used for arable farming, 37% is forested, 5% is used for pasture land.

The municipality of San Juan Cancuc borders the municipalities of Sitalá , Chilón , Ocosingo , Oxchuc , Tenejapa , Chenalhó and Pantelhó .

In the 2010 census, 29,016 people in 5,037 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 25,926 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 23,978 speakers from the Tzeltal . A good 37 percent of the population were illiterate. 6,955 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which over 87% were men or 0.85% were unemployed. Over 80% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
