Amatán is a municipality in the north of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality is located in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas . The municipality has about 21,000 inhabitants and an area of 317 km². The administrative seat and largest town is Amatán of the same name .
The name Amatán comes from Nahuatl and means place of the Amatl trees .
geography
The Municipio Amatán is located in the north of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights of up to 2000 m . It lies entirely in the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 50% sandstone - lutite with 48% limestone ; the predominant soil type is Luvisol (76%). About 42% of the community area is forested, about 37% is used as pasture and 16% is used for arable farming.
The municipality of Amatán borders the municipalities of Huitiupán , Pueblo Nuevo Solistahuacán , Ixhuatán , Solosuchiapa , and Ixtapangajoya as well as the state of Tabasco .

The 2010 census counted 21,275 people in 4,294 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 6,976 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , of which 3,373 speakers of the Tzeltal language and 2,794 speakers of the Zoque . A good 26 percent of the population was illiterate. 5,998 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 95% were men or 1.75% were unemployed. 54% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
