Motozintla is a municipality in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has 69,119 inhabitants and an area of ​​586.4 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is Motozintla de Mendoza .

The name Motozintla comes from Nahuatl and means "slope of the squirrels".

The municipality of Motozintla is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 300  m and 3100  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and is 81% in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas and 19% in the Grijalva - Usumacinta region . The geology of the municipality is determined by 49% granite with 27% metamorphic and 21% andesite ; The predominant soil types are Luvisol (37%), Regosol (28%), Cambisol and Acrisol (17% each). About 50% of the community area is forested, 35% is used for arable farming, and almost 15% is pasture land.

The municipality of Motozintla borders the municipalities Tapachula , Tuzantán , Huixtla , Escuintla , Siltepec , El Porvenir and Mazapa de Madero as well as the Republic of Guatemala .

In the 2010 census, 69,119 people were counted in 13,782 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 755 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 565 speakers of the Mam . A good 12 percent of the population were illiterate. 21,797 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 83% were men and 2.3% were unemployed. Almost 35% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
