Huixtla is a municipality in the southwest of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 51,000 inhabitants and an area of 397.6 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Huixtla of the same name .
The name Huixtla comes from the Nahuatl and means "place where there are many thorns".
Part of the La Encrucijada biosphere reserve is located in the municipality of Huixtla .
geography
The municipality of Huixtla is located in the southwest of the Mexican state Chiapas in the Soconusco region on the edge of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas between sea level and 1600 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas . 38% of the geology of the municipality is determined by alluvions with 30% lacustrian deposits and 27% granite , the predominant soil types are Cambisol (30%), Gleysol (29%) and Luvisol (25%). About 48% of the community area is used for arable farming, a good quarter is taken up by water and swamp plant landscapes, 16% is pasture land.
The municipality of Huixtla borders the municipalities Escuintla , Motozintla , Tuzantán , Huehuetán , Mazatán , Acapetahua and Villa Comaltitlán as well as the Pacific .

In the 2010 census, 51,359 people were counted in 12,876 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 199 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language . Over eleven percent of the population was illiterate. 19,263 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which almost 71% were men and 3.8% were unemployed. 18% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
