Lithocarpus glaber is a deciduous tree from the species-rich genus Lithocarpus in the subfamily Quercoideae withinthe beech family (Fagaceae). Synonyms are Pasania glabra (Thunb.) Oerst. and Quercus glabra Thunb.

description

Lithocarpus glaber is an evergreen tree that reaches heights of up to 7 meters (according to other sources up to 10 meters).

The seed has the shape of an elongated acorn. The seeds contain a lot of tannin and are therefore inedible without treatment; After removing the bitter substances through soaking and boiling, they are edible.

Distribution and location

The species is native to China , Japan, and Taiwan . It occurs in the eastern Chinese provinces of Anhui , Fujian , Guangdong , Guangxi , Guizhou , Henan , Hubei , Hunan , Jiangsu , Jiangxi and Zhejiang . In Japan, the deposits are on Honshū , Kyushu and the Ryūkyū Islands . The tree grows mainly on sunny mountain slopes and climbs altitudes of up to 1500 m.
