Tuzantán is a municipality in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has a good 28,000 inhabitants and is 174.9 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is Tuzantán of the same name .
The name Tuzantán comes from the Nahuatl and means "where there are a lot of pocket rats ".
geography
The municipality of Tuzantán is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas in the Soconusco region at altitudes below 1,400 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas . The geology of the municipality is 63% granite with 26% alluvion and 6% andesite ; The predominant soil types are Luvisol (52%), Cambisol (27%) and Acrisol (15%). About 70% of the community area is used for arable farming, 29% is used as pasture land.
The municipality of Tuzantán borders on the municipalities of Motozintla , Tapachula , Huehuetán and Huixtla .

The 2010 census counted 28,137 people in 6,476 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 127 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 38 speakers of the Mam and 36 speakers of the Tzotzil . 15.5 percent of the population were illiterate. 9,597 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which just under 79% were men and 1.5% were unemployed. 40% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
