Catazajá is a municipality in the north of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 17,000 inhabitants and is 631.8 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest town is the Catazajá of the same name .
The name Catazajá is of Mayan origin and means "valley covered by water".
geography
The municipality of Cacahoatán is located in the extreme north of the Mexican state Chiapas at an altitude of less than 100 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the southern coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined to 46% by sandstone with 26% palustrian deposits and 17% alluvion ; the predominant soil types are Gleysol (60%) and Vertisol (12%). A good half of the community area is used as pastureland.
The Municipio Catazajá borders the Municipio Palenque and the State of Tabasco .

In the 2010 census, 17,140 people were counted in 4,218 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 451 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 216 speakers of the Chol . A good 17 percent of the population was illiterate. 5,941 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 89% were men or 0.6% were unemployed. A good 20% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
