Huixtán is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 21,500 inhabitants and an area of 311.8 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Huixtán of the same name .
The name of the community comes from Nahuatl and means "place where there are many thorns".
geography
The municipality of Huixtán is located in the north of the Mexican state Chiapas at altitudes between 1500 m and 2700 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 50% silty sandstone with 44% limestone and 6% sandstone lutite , the predominant soil types are Luvisol (62%), Alisol (18%) and Leptosol (11%). About 70% of the community area is used for arable farming, 26% is forested.
The municipality of Huixtán borders the municipalities of Tenejapa , Oxchuc , Chanal , San Cristóbal de las Casas and Teopisca .

In the 2010 census, 21,507 people in 3,944 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 18,611 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 11,131 speakers from Tzotzil and 6,337 speakers from Tzeltal . A good 27 percent of the population was illiterate. 6,751 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 76% were men or 1.2% were unemployed. A good 60% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
