Suchiate is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . It is the southernmost municipality in the country. Its name comes from Nahuatl and means "flower water".

The municipality has almost 35,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​237 km². The largest town and administrative center is Ciudad Hidalgo .

geography

The Municipio Suchiate is located in the extreme south of the Mexican state Chiapas at an altitude of less than 100  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas . 87% of the geology of the municipality is determined by alluvions , with 8% lacustric deposits; The predominant soil types are the Phaeozem (63%), Cambisol (17%) and Solonchak (11%). About 60% of the community area is used for arable farming, 24% is used for pasture land and 9% is used by mangroves.

The Municipio Suchiate borders the Municipios Frontera Hidalgo and Tapachula and the Republic of Guatemala .

In the 2010 census, 35,056 people were counted in 8,811 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 83 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language . Almost 18.5 percent of the population were illiterate. 12,219 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 76% were men and 2% were unemployed. A good 32% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
