Street in Ciudad Hidalgo |
The city of Ciudad Hidalgo , with around 15,000 inhabitants, is the most populous border city between Mexico and neighboring Guatemala .
location
Ciudad Hidalgo is about 20 km (as the crow flies) north of the Pacific coast on the Mexican side of the border river Río Suchiate and only about 5 km from the Guatemalan border town Ciudad Tecún Umán . The next largest city is Tapachula, 38 km (driving distance) to the northwest . The capital of Chiapas, Tuxtla Gutiérrez , is about 430 km away; to Mexico City it is about 1130 km.
economy
The border town lives mainly from the movement of goods to Guatemala, which is handled via the Rodolfo-Robles Bridge ; Many goods are faster and cheaper in Mexico, so that many Guatemalan small traders stock up here and get their purchases across the shallow river on foot or in rubber dinghies. In addition, illegal drug and migration deals are carried out.
history
After the dispute over the affiliation of Chiapas was settled in 1882, about 2000 people settled on the Mexican side of the Río Suchiate. Instead of a small settlement, the place Mariscal was built on a rectangular street plan , which was renamed Suchiate a few years later . In 1925 the settlement received the status of a pueblo ; 27 years later (1952) the place received city rights and was renamed Ciudad Hidalgo in honor of the priest and independence fighter Miguel Hidalgo (1753-1811).
