Ixtacomitán is a municipality in the north of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 10,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​125.7 km². The administrative seat and largest town of the municipality is Ixtacomitán of the same name .

The name Ixtacomitán comes from the Nahuatl and means “excess of fever”.

The municipality of Ixtacomitán is located in the north of the Mexican state Chiapas at an altitude of less than 1200  m . 97% of it belongs to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and 3% to the southern coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico . The municipality lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 88% determined by sandstone - lutite with 8% limestone , the predominant soil type is Luvisol (98%). About 64% of the community area is pasture, 28% is forested, 7% is used for arable farming.

The municipality of Ixtacomitán borders the municipalities of Pichucalco , Ixtapangajoya , Solosuchiapa and Chapultenango .

In the 2010 census, 10,176 people were counted in 2,235 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 2,269 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 1,993 speakers of the Zoque . A good 14 percent of the population was illiterate. 3,356 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which just under 81% were men and 3.8% were unemployed. 35% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
