Chiapilla is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 5400 inhabitants and an area of ​​51.6 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Chiapilla of the same name .

geography

The municipality of Chiapilla is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas at heights between 300  m and 800  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined to 62% by silty sandstone with 18% limestone - lutite and 13% alluvion ; The predominant soil types are the Phaeozem (49%), Leptosol (25%) and Luvisol (17%). About 92% of the community area is used for agriculture.

The municipality of Chiapilla borders on the municipalities of Acala , San Lucas and Totolapa .

In the 2010 census, 5405 people in 1347 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 200 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 191 speakers of the Tzotzil . A good 26 percent of the population was illiterate. 2034 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which over 83% were men or 0.9% were unemployed. A good 35% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
