Mazatán is a municipality in the southwest of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has 26,573 inhabitants and an area of ​​384 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is Mazatán of the same name .

The name Mazatán comes from the Nahuatl and means "place where there is a lot of game". The municipality has a share in the La Encrucijada biosphere reserve .

geography

The municipality of Mazatán is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas in the Soconusco region at an altitude of less than 100  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas . The geology of the municipality is 66% determined by alluvions with 19% lacustric deposits; the predominant soil types are Phaeozem (65%), Gleysol (16%) and Solonchak (12%). About 57% of the community area is used for arable farming, 30% is occupied by wetland.

The municipality of Mazatán borders the municipalities of Huixtla , Huehuetán and Tapachula as well as the Pacific .

The 2010 census counted 26,573 people in 6,905 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 101 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language . A good 15 percent of the population was illiterate. 9,360 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which almost 80% were men and 1.6% were unemployed. Over 28% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
