Tuxtla Chico is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 37,000 inhabitants and is 161.9 m². The administrative seat and largest town of the municipality is the Tuxtla Chico of the same name .

The name Tuxtla comes from Nahuatl and means "place of the rabbits".

In the municipality is the archaeological site of Izapa .

geography

The municipality of Tuxtla Chico is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas in the Soconusco region at an altitude of less than 500  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas . The geology of the municipality is 48% determined by conglomerate rock with 39% alluvion and 13% tuff ; The predominant soil types are Luvisol (53%) and Cambisol (45%). Around 62% are used for arable farming, 35% are used as pasture land.

The municipality of Tuxtla Chico borders the municipalities Cacahoatán , Tapachula , Frontera Hidalgo and Metapa as well as the Republic of Guatemala .

In the 2010 census, 37,737 people in 8,921 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 87 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 31 speakers of the Mam . 15.5 percent of the population were illiterate. 13,626 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 74% were men and 3% were unemployed. Almost 18% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
