Tenejapa is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has a good 40,000 inhabitants and is 193.1 km² in size. The administrative seat is Tenejapa of the same name , while the largest place in the municipality is Kotolte .
The name comes from Nahuatl and means "calcareous river".
geography
The municipality of Tenejapa is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas at heights between 800 m and 2700 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 60% limestone with 19% sandstone - lutite and 17% silty sandstone; The predominant soil types are Alisol (34%), Luvisol (30%), Leptosol (27%) and Phaeozem (10%). 49.5% of the municipal area is forested or used for arable farming.
The municipality of Tenejapa is bordered by the municipalities of Chenalhó , San Juan Cancuc , Oxchuc , Huixtán , San Cristóbal de las Casas , Chamula and Mitontic .

The 2010 census counted 40,268 people in 7,132 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 36,353 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 33,759 speakers from the Tzeltal . A good 25 percent of the population was illiterate. 11,616 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which just under 82% were men and 0.65% were unemployed. 65% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
