Anatoly Alexandrovich Smorodintsev

Anatoly Alexandrovich Smorodinzew ( Russian Анатолий Александрович Смородинцев , scientific. Transliteration Anatoly Aleksandrovich Smorodincev ; born April 6, jul. / 19th April  1901 greg. In Askino Ufa Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 6. August 1986 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg ) USSR ) was a Soviet bacteriologist , virologist, and immunologist . He has done significant work in the fields of antiviral immunity , tick encephalitis , hemorrhagic nephrosonephritis, polio , epidemic parotitis , influenza and infection prophylaxis. He received the Stalin Prize (1941), the Lenin Prize (1963), twice the Order of Lenin , the Order of Friendship of Peoples and the Badge of Honor of the Soviet Union .

Life

Smorodinsev spent his early childhood and school days in Aksino, north of Ufa . His father was a doctor. In 1918 Smorodintsev moved to Tomsk to study at the medical faculty of the local university . After completing his studies, he initially worked as an assistant at the bacteriological institute in Tomsk. In 1924 he was drafted into the Red Army and worked as a doctor on the Turkestani front of the Russian Civil War . In 1926 he completed an internship at the Institute of Experimental Medicine. At the same time, Smorodintsev worked as a laboratory manager at the Central Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Leningrad. From 1933 to 1937 he headed the department of bacteriology at the Leningrad Institute of Bacteriology and Epidemiology Louis Pasteur . From 1938 he headed the Virus and Virology Department at the Union Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Soviet Academy of Medical Sciences.

Together with MP Tschumakow, Smorodintsev developed a polio vaccine . He also developed the flu vaccine , which was used in the Soviet Union, as well as vaccines against TBE , measles and mumps . In 1966 he was elected an academician of the Soviet Academy of Healing Sciences.

In August 1986 Smorodintsev was buried in the Leningrad Bogoslovskoye Cemetery.
