Parotitis

A parotitis is an inflammation of the parotid glands ( parotid gland ). A distinction parotitis acute and mumps epidemic .

Acute parotitis

This is a purulent inflammation of the parotid gland caused by group A streptococci , which can be found physiologically in the oral flora.

Symptoms are a very painful swelling of the gland in front of the ear, the lifting of the earlobe. There may be a flow of pus into the oral cavity, occasionally fever and clamp.

Epidemic parotitis

This is a synonym for mumps , which is caused by mumps viruses (paramyxoviruses).

treatment

If there is a proven bacterial cause, parotitis is usually treated with an antibiotic preparation, such as amoxicillin . In addition, pain reliever and antipyretic drugs can be used. Depending on the severity of the course, the use of corticosteroids may also be indicated.

In the past, parotitis was also known colloquially as Feusel or Feifel.
