The name of the language, Tojol ab'al , means "original language" or "true language".

Tojolabal belongs to the Maya languages and is closely related to the Chuj language .
distribution
According to the 2010 census, the language is spoken by 54,201 people in the Mexican state of Chiapas in the municipalities of Las Margaritas and Comitán .
