The Lagunas de Montebello National Park in Mexico was established in 1959. The nature reserve is about 7000 hectares and is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas near the border with Guatemala . The national park has been a designated biosphere reserve by UNESCO since 2009 and includes over 50 lakes of different colors. The lake district is in the highlands and the climate is consistently mild. The lakes are surrounded by pine trees . The closest city is Comitán de Domínguez .
The park is between 1500 and 1800 meters above sea level , the landscape is characterized by hills.
The main attractions of the national park are the multicolored lakes and their bird life. The ruins of Chinkultic from the classical Mayan era are also located within the national park.
