Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales
The Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT) is the political "Secretariat (of the government) for the environment and natural resources" in Mexico . As the government secretariat, it is comparable to a ministry for the environment .
It was founded in 1982 under the name of the Secretariat for Fisheries ( Secretaría de Pesca ). In 1994 it was expanded to become the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente, Recursos Naturales y Pesca . In 2000, responsibility for fisheries was transferred to SAGARPA , giving the SEMARNAT its current name.
There are three sub-secretariats ( Subsecretarías ) for " Environmental planning and policy " ( Planeación y Política Ambiental ), " Environmental management" ( Gestión para la Protección Ambiental ) and " Environmental promotion and normativity " ( Fomento y Normatividad Ambiental ), as well as the sector bodies ( Organismos Sectorizados ). The business area includes the National Commission for Water Comisión Nacional del Agua (CNA) and the Federal Administration for Environmental Protection Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (PROFEPA); these are subject to each.
