During this time, corruption trials against Montiel were discontinued; Peña Nieto's tenure was marked by various judicial scandals and human rights violations.
In early 2012, Peña Nieto was selected as the top candidate of the PRI party for the presidential election in early July 2012, with no internal rivals. He took over from Felipe Calderón ( PAN ) on December 1, 2012 . In 2012, critics said Peña Nieto was a puppet of former PRI rulers Carlos Salinas de Gortari and Jorge Hank , ex-mayor of Tijuana , who are suspected of corruption .
During the trial of El Chapo (Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera) on January 15, 2019, a prosecution witness accused Peña Nieto of demanding US $ 250 million in protection money from Guzmán shortly before his election in 2012. Guzmán then traded Nieto down to 100 million US dollars and paid the amount. The witness, Alex Cifuentes, describes himself as Guzmán's former right-hand man. Nieto denied the allegations on his Twitter account.
