José López Portillo y Pacheco (born June 16, 1920 in Mexico City , † February 17, 2004 there ) was President of Mexico (December 1, 1976 to November 30, 1982).

Life

López Portillo was the son of José López Portillo y Weber and his wife Rosario Pacheco. He studied law at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and was professor there from 1954, first for state theory, then for political science. In 1959 he became a member of the PRI ; 1973–1975 he was Finance Minister under Luis Echeverría , his successor as President of Mexico from 1976–1982.

Due to an increase in oil exports, the economy initially flourished under his presidency; later, however, there were high national debts and social tensions. In the last year of his government, Mexico became insolvent due to galloping inflation and international oil prices falling sharply . On September 1, 1982, he nationalized the Mexican banks.

He was accepted into the Nassau House Order of the Golden Lion on September 19, 1980 by the Luxembourg Grand Duke Jean .
