Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa (born August 18, 1962 in Morelia , Michoacán ) is a Mexican lawyer and politician ( PAN ) and was President of Mexico from 2006 to 2012 .

Life

Felipe Calderón Hinojosa was the first of four children to Luis Calderón Vega and his wife Carmen Hinojosa González. The qualified lawyer and attorney studied law at the Escuela libre de derecho in Mexico City . He then studied business administration at ITAM , the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México and administrative law at the John F. Kennedy School of Harvard University .

Political career

Calderón has in the PAN, which he already joined as a youth, completed a political career, which was crowned with the post of party leader (Presidente del Comité Ejecutivo Nacional) 1996-1999. He had previously run in the 1995 gubernatorial elections of Michoacán , but had only received 25 percent of the vote.

Calderón was twice represented in the Chamber of Deputies of the Federal District and the Congress of the Union of Mexico . In the latter he was parliamentary group leader of the PAN group from 2001 . From 2003 to May 2004 he was Minister of Energy in the government of President Vicente Fox Quesada . Calderón went against the will of Fox, who favored another candidate, in the primaries for the free choice of the PAN candidate (Christian Democratic Conservative Party) for the 2006 presidential election , since October 23, 2005 he was the official candidate of his party. In the elections on July 2, 2006, he narrowly prevailed against Andrés Manuel López Obrador . On December 1, 2006, Felipe Calderón was sworn in as President of Mexico.

Calderón's opponent López Obrador denied the election result, mobilized his supporters in Mexico City for weeks and on November 20, 2006 proclaimed an opposing government. In a poll carried out in 2007, 36% of those questioned said that the 2006 presidential election had been cheated or that there had been significant irregularities.

One of the defining decisions of Calderón's tenure was to intensify the fight against drug cartels with the military and police . Immediately after his election in December 2006, he sent around 7,000 security guards to Michoacán to fight organized crime there. This is considered to be the start of the drug war in Mexico .

In 2011 Calderón received the Champions of Earth Award .
