Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores
The Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) is the political "secretariat (of the government) for external relations" in Mexico , comparable to a foreign ministry . It was founded in 1876 and is based in Mexico City .
The secretariat is divided into four sub-secretariats for “External Relations”, “ Latin America and the Caribbean ”, “ North America ” and “Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights ”, as well as the two departments for “Economic Relations and International Cooperation” and “Legal Coordination and Information Documentation”. The “Matías Romero” Institute and the Institute for Mexicans Abroad ( Instituto para los Mexicanos en el Exterior ) are also part of the SRE. The Mexican missions abroad are also the responsibility of the SRE.
The original central office building was handed over to the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México after moving into the new headquarters . The architect of the new building in 1970 was the Mexican Rafael Mijares Alcérreca .
