Ocosingo is a city in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The capital of the municipality of the same name has 41,787 inhabitants (2010). The name Ocosingo comes from Nahuatl and means "place of the black man".
history
Before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors , Ocosingo was an important center of the Tzeltal . Under Spanish colonial rule, many inhabitants of the surrounding forests were settled in Ocosingo. After Mexico's independence, Ocosingo was declared a villa in 1829 , capital of the Chilón department in 1878 and finally a city in 1979. In 1994 Ocosingo became known as a center of the EZLN's activities.
