Motorbike taxis in Bangkok (right)

Motorbike taxis are a comparatively cheap and widely used means of local transport in almost all major cities in the developing world.

In Berlin , motorcycle taxis were used for a short time as early as 1927. These were motorcycle combinations , the sidecars of which were covered. However, they did not prevail there.

Today's motorcycle taxis are standard mopeds on which passengers and goods are transported in the back seat. The prices are consistently far lower than in taxis , but you are exposed to widespread air pollution as well as the often considerable potential danger of road traffic.

Motorcycle taxis can be found in many cities in Peru , China , Indonesia , Brazil and Thailand , for example , with the world's highest motorcycle density per inhabitant being found in Bangkok . There are also stations on every major street corner where motorcycle taxi drivers wait for customers who usually want to be transported to the not-too-far area.

In many regions of Sub-Saharan Africa , too , motorcycle taxis are very popular with the local population, as they are less prone to traffic jams and use some dirt roads in the country that are impassable for motor vehicles: the Nigerian Okada and the Bodabodas in Uganda are famous .
