Băiuț ( Hungarian Erzsébetbánya ) is a municipality in the Maramureş district in northwestern Romania . The place is particularly well known as a mining settlement (gold, silver, zinc, lead and copper ores).

history

In 1776 a new iron mine was opened here. The melting furnaces, which went into operation in 1778, were moved to Strâmbu-Băiuț around 1811.

Demographics

In the 1930 census, a total of 1065 inhabitants were registered, of which 653 Magyars , 392 Romanians and 20 Jews.
