Bocicoiu Mare [ ˈbotʃikoiu mare ] ( German  Groß-Botschko , Hungarian Nagybocskó , Ukrainian Великий Бичків / Welykyj Bytschkiw ) is a municipality in Romania and is located in the Maramureș district . It consists of four villages, with the village Bocicoiu Mare in the strict sense of the word counting 804 inhabitants in 2002.

Originally two cities

The settlement was originally formed from two parts, in Hungarian Kisbocskó and Németbocskó . After the division of the former Hungarian Kingdom, it was divided into two settlements on the left and right of the river Tisza . Today the river Tisza forms the state border between Romania and Ukraine . The Ukrainian part on both sides of the border is called Welykyj Bytschkiw , created from Kis- and Nagybocskó , and the Romanian part is called Bocicoiu Mare, the former Németbocskó .

Name declaration

The Romanian word Mare in Bocicoiu Mare and the Hungarian word Nagy in Nagy Bocsko are the German word Groß in their respective national languages . Bocska is the name of the landowner. The name was later Romanianized and changed to Bocicoiou.

religion

75% of the population are Orthodox, 15% Catholic (8% Byzantine rite, 7% Latin rite) and 4% Jehovah's Witnesses. The other religions each make up less than 1%.
