Săpânța old spelling Săpînța [ səpɨntsa ] ( Hungarian Szaplonca , Slovak Sapunka , Yiddish Spinka or Shpinka ) is a municipality in the Maramureş District in Romania .
Geographical location
Săpânța is located in northern Romania about one kilometer south of the upper reaches of the Tisza , in the historical region of Maramures ( Máramaros county ). At Drum național 19 , the place is about 20 kilometers northwest of Sighetu Marmației ; the district capital Baia Mare ( Frauenbach ) is about 80 kilometers (35 km as the crow flies) south of Săpânța.
Attractions
- The place is known for the "Merry Cemetery" ( Cimitirul Vesel ), where the local artist Stan Ioan Pătraș has designed the traditional wooden grave stelae with hand-painted pictures of the deceased and verses about their lives for decades.
- On the outskirts of Săpânța, the Peri monastery Sfântul Arhanghel Mihail has been built since the beginning of the 3rd millennium . His church, built from 1997 to 2003, is said to be the highest stave church in Europe at 75 m .
