Poienile de sub Munte ( Ukrainian [Русь] Поляни / [Rus] Poljany or Полонина / Polonyna , Hungarian Ruszpolyána or Havasmező , German Reußenau , Yiddish Vermeziv, Hebrew פאליען-ריסקווה) is a place and a municipality in Maramureș County in the very north of Romania .
location
The place is in the side valley Valea Misica, which branches off from the Wischau valley to the northeast near Leordina . It is about 10 km from the Ukrainian border.
Poienile is the largest municipality in the Romanian part of the Maramures. By far the largest part of the community is wooded mountainous areas of the Maramures Mountains , part of the Forest Carpathians . In the northwest lies the massif of the Pip Iwan Maramureș (Vârful Pop Ivan, 1936 m), in the north of the Farcău ( Vârful Farcău , 1956 m), in the northeast of the Vârful Rechita (1573 m) and in the south the mountains of the Pietrosul-Maramureșului group . The rivers Rica, Socolau, Bardiu and Covasnita unite in the municipality to form Ruscova, which drain into the Vișeu ( Wischau ).
history
The oldest written mention of Poienile de Sub Munte in 1353 makes the place one of the oldest in Maramures. The place is also mentioned in the 14th and 15th centuries by Ioan Mihalyi de Apsa ("Diplomele maramuresene" from 1411), whereby the settlement was part of the Knesat of Cuhea. Since then, the place, known as Ruskopolanya or Poiana Rusului , Ruspolyana and Polyana , has mainly been inhabited by residents of Slavic descent. A strong Jewish minority lived in the village until the Second World War (more than 15% in 1920). Today Ruthenian and Romanian farmers live here .
economy
The community is predominantly settled by farmers who own their large plots of land in the remote region. The traditional timber industry also serves as a source of income for the local population.
