Ocna Șugatag ( German  Altwerk , Hungarian Aknasugatag ) is a municipality in the Maramureş district in northwest Romania . The place is particularly well known as a thermal station for its salt baths .

Geographical location

The municipality is located on the Maramureș plateau at an altitude of about 500 meters, in the Maramureș Depression (Depresiunea Maramureșului) north of the Gutâi Mountains (Munții Gutâi) . The place extends along the county road (drum județean) DJ 109F between Baia Mare and Sighetu Marmației . It is 20 kilometers to Sighetu Marmației and the Ukrainian border .

history

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1355 in a document on the land distribution of the Maramureș. From 1787 to 1822 table salt was dug in mines in front of the village , most of which was then sold on. Today the pits are closed and the underground salt is used in the numerous salt baths. Writings on the region's famous medicinal springs date back to the 19th century. They were known as Bredenbad or Bad Brieb .

population

In a census from 1930 in the place Ocna Șugatag itself 1568 inhabitants were determined. 890 of them were Magyars , 480 Romanians , 169 were Jews , 18 Germans and one claimed to be Ukrainian . The 2002 census counted 4,207 residents in the municipality. 3710 of them were Romanians, 403 of them were Hungarians, 76 Roma , 14 Ukrainians, three were German and one of them was Jewish. In 2011, 3853 people were registered in the Ocna Șugatag municipality.

economy

As in the rest of the region, agriculture, forestry and livestock are among the main industries in Ocna Șugatag. In addition, many residents are active in the tourism industry, especially in the numerous salt baths.

With the help of outside investors, they want to build new schools and kindergartens in the future. In addition, the water supply and road network are to be expanded.

Tourism and sightseeing

  • In the incorporated village of Breb ( Bréb in Hungarian ) the wooden church built in the 16th century and the rectory in the 18th century are under monument protection.
  • In the incorporated village of Hoteni (Hungarian Hotinka ) the wooden church Sf. Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril , built in 1657, is a listed building.
  • The wooden church Cuvioasa Paraschiva built in 1642 in the incorporated village of Sat-Șugatag (Hungarian Falusugatag ) is a listed building.

Ocna Șugatag lives from bathing tourism. This is not just about spa and saltwater pools in hotels. Also in the great outdoors and in swimming pools, many salt baths are set up in summer, which are used by visitors from all over the surrounding area.

The municipality is also known for its 44 hectare Pădurea Crăiască forest reserve , which is home to a large number of old oaks and larches. The 50 hectare nature reserve Rezervația Creasta Cocoșului (Hahnenkamm) , south of the municipality - in the area of ​​the municipality Desești - also has a variety of different plant and animal species and was declared a nature reserve in 2000.
