Bishop Atanasie Rednic

Atanasie Rednic OSBM (born February 18, 1722 in Giuleşti , Máramaros County , Grand Duchy of Transylvania ; † May 2, 1772 in Blaj ) was a Romanian-Greek Catholic bishop of Făgăraş .

Life

Atanasie Rednic went in 1734 to study philosophy at the Jesuit College in Cluj . In 1738 he began a novitiate in the monastery Mukacheve the Basilian of St. Josaphat; went back to Klausenburg and continued his studies, in 1743 he studied theology in Vienna ; In 1747 he returned to his monastery. After taking his vows , he was ordained a religious priest in 1749 . 1750–1751 he accompanied Bishop Petru Pavel Aron on his visitations. In 1754 he became prefect of the newly founded seminary in Blasendorf .

After the death of Bishop Petru Pavel Aron on January 27, 1764, he was nominated as his successor in the autumn of the same year. He traveled to Vienna to personally deliver the nomination to Empress Maria Theresa . On April 22, 1765, he was appointed bishop of Făgăraş by the imperial court. On May 15, 1765, Pope Clement XIII confirmed . this appointment. He was consecrated on November 13, 1765 in his home monastery by the titular bishop of Rhosus and Greek Catholic Apostolic Vicar of Mukacheve , Mihály Emánuel Olsavszky OSBM. Atanasie Rednic was solemnly installed in his diocese on April 14, 1766. He negotiated in Vienna to improve the life of the priests, he received 10,000 guilders in cash to support those in need. He reformed the monasteries in Blasendorf and Karlsburg , sent the monks to pastoral work to support the clergy, and gave them sales opportunities for their print products, ceramics, candles and tailoring. He had the seminary expanded to lead young men to the priesthood. He obliged the priests to wear the cassock .

Bishop Atanasie Rednic died on May 2, 1772 and was buried in the bishop's tomb in the Blaj cemetery.
