Gheorghe Guțiu

Gheorghe Gutiu (* the 30th March 1924 in Vaideiu in Mureş County , † 8. May 2011 in Cluj ) was a Romanian Greek Catholic Bishop of Cluj-Gherla with the personal title of archbishop. He spent 14 years in prison.

Life

Gheorghe Guțiu studied at the Romanian Academy of Theology "Sfânta Treime" in Blasendorf and was ordained a priest on December 8, 1948 by the Roman Catholic Archbishop and Metropolitan of Bucharest , Alexandru Theodor Cisar . This happened a week after the Romanian Greek Catholic Church was officially banned and all Greek Catholic bishops in Romania were arrested.

He was arrested on January 30, 1951 and charged by the Interior Ministry in Bucharest. On February 20, 1952, he was sentenced to life in a labor camp. On August 4, 1964, following an ordinance pardoning all political prisoners by the communist regime, the “20th Anniversary of the Liberation from Fascism ”. He then worked as an economist in a state company in Sankt Martin until 1986 .

On March 14, 1990, he was elected Bishop of Cluj - Gherla by the Holy Synod . Pope John Paul II confirmed the election on June 17 of the same year. The episcopal ordination on June 17 of the same year donated him the Archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia , Alexandru Todea ; Co- consecrators were Ioan Ploscaru , Bishop of Lugoj and Lucian Mureşan , Bishop of Maramureş .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop ad personam on July 20, 1994 in recognition of his outstanding services in the defense of Christianity during communist persecution . In 2000 he was awarded the National Order of Merit Pentru Merit by the Romanian President Emil Constantinescu .

On July 18, 2002, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
