Alexandru Sterca-Șuluțiu (also Alexandru Sterca Șuluțiu de Kerpenyes ; * February 5, 1794 in Abrud ( German : Großschlatten , Hungarian : Abrudbánya ), Unterweißburg County , Grand Duchy of Transylvania , today in Romania ; † September 7, 1867 in Blaj ( German : Blasendorf ), Hungarian : Balázsfalva ) was Romanian-Greek-Catholic Archbishop of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia .

Life

Of noble origin from the dynasty of Kerpenyes joined Alexandru Sterca-Şuluţiu after high school in the Seminary in Blaj, and received the 1814 ordination . He married and got a chaplaincy in Bistra (Alba) . His wife died early and he decided to become celibate . He became vice-archdeacon and archpriest and finally, in 1836, episcopal vicar of Șimleu . He campaigned for the establishment of Romanian village schools.

On November 18, 1850 he was elected Bishop of Făgăraş. Pope Pius IX confirmed this choice on February 17, 1851. The episcopal ordination donated him on July 22nd, 1851 Vasile Erdely , the bishop of Großwardein .

With the restoration of the archdiocese of Alba Iulia, which was important for church politics on November 16, 1854, he was appointed Archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia and Metropolitan of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church. The inauguration as archbishop and metropolitan took place on October 28, 1855 in the cathedral of Blaj by the then nuncio Michele Viale-Prelà .

Metropolitan Alexandru Sterca-Șuluțiu was a good organizer, administrator, manager and at the same time a man of culture. He has received numerous awards and received several titles, orders and medals.

He died on September 7, 1867 and found his final resting place near Blaj Cathedral .
