Bishop Vasile Erdelyi

Vasile Erdelyi (born August 1, 1794 in Makó ; † March 27, 1862 in Nagyvárad ) was a Hungarian clergyman. He was Bishop of the Oradea Mare Eparchy of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church .

Life

Vasile Erdelyi studied philosophy and law in Temesvár and Nagyvárad , went to study theology in Pest and Vienna and received the sacrament of ordination on November 12, 1820. He became "first priest" in Morgan Hill ( USA ). In 1835 he became rector of the seminary in Nagyvárad. On August 2, 1842 he was elected Bishop of Oradea Mare, on January 30, 1843 by Pope Gregory XVI. approved. He was consecrated on June 11, 1843 in the cathedral of Blaj by Ioan Lemeni , the bishop of Făgăraş . He was installed in his diocese in the cathedral of Nagyvárad on June 18, 1843. He campaigned for the creation of the new eparchies Gherla and Lugoj , as well as the reorganization of the metropolitan area of ​​Făgăraş and Alba Iulia. He became imperial advisor and ennobled ( baron ) by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1858 .

He died on March 27, 1862 and was buried in Nagyvárad Cathedral.
