Iosif Papp-Szilágyi
Iosif Papp-Szilágyi ( Romanian : Iosif Pop Sliaghi , born April 10, 1813 in Értarcsa , Hungary ; † August 5, 1873 in Oradea ) was Bishop of Oradea Mare (Oradea) of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church .
Life
Iosif Papp-Szilágyi was an exceptional student; his bishop sent him to Vienna to study theology . On 6 August 1836, he was a deacon and on August 15 of that year by Bishop Samuil Vulcan for priests ordained. He became secretary to the bishop and director of the Diocesan Museum. On May 27, 1845 he was accepted into the cathedral chapter of Großwardein. From 1852 to 1856 he was rector of the seminary in Oradea. He was Vicar General of Bishop Vasile Erdely .
On December 4, 1862 he was elected Bishop of Oradea Mare, on March 16, 1863 by Pope Pius IX. approved. It was consecrated on May 3, 1863 in the cathedral of Blaj by Alexandru Șterca Sulutiu de Kerpenyes , the archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia . He was installed in his diocese in the cathedral of Großwardein on May 17, 1863. On June 17, 1867 he was appointed Papal Assistant to the Throne and was a participant in the 1st Vatican Council . On his return from Rome he fell seriously ill and died on August 5, 1873. He was buried in Oradea Cathedral.
