Bishop Joan Olteanu

Ioan Olteanu (born December 14, 1839 in Sântesci , Romania , † November 29, 1877 in Oradea ) was Bishop of Oradea Mare (Oradea) of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church .

Life

Ioan Olteanu attended grammar school in Lugoj and Blaj , studied theology in Vienna and was ordained a priest on April 5, 1863. On July 25, 1870, he was appointed Bishop of Lugoj . It was consecrated on September 18, 1870 by Iosif Papp-Szilágyi , the bishop of Oradea. Just three years later, on December 16, 1873, he was elected Bishop of Großwardein. Pope Pius IX confirmed this choice after a few days (December 22, 1873). The solemn installation took place on January 24, 1874 in St. Nicholas Cathedral in Oradea. He was particularly dedicated to charity in his diocese. He received many awards, was the bearer of the Grand Cross of the Franz Joseph Order and papal assistant to the throne .

After a serious illness ( cirrhosis of the liver ) he died at the age of only 38 and was buried in the crypt of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Oradea (Greater Oradea).
