Alexandru Dobra (born February 15, 1794 in Șopteriu , Bistritz district , Transylvania (now Romania ); † April 13, 1870 in Lugoj ) was the Romanian-Greek Catholic bishop of Lugoj ( German : Lugosch ; Hungarian : Lugos ).

Life

The son of a priest attended the elementary school in his hometown and the grammar school in Târgu Mureș ( German : Neumarkt am Mieresch ; Hungarian : Marosvásárhely ). After graduating from high school in 1812, he entered the theological seminar of the diocese Făgăraş in Blaj , began studying theology and in 1814 moved to Oradea Mare (Großwardein) . Bishop Samuil Vulcan sent him to Pest for further studies and consecrated him on November 28, 1818 in Oradea Mare (Oradea) as a celibate priest . After studying Dan at the Theological Academy "St. Augustin" in Vienna, he received his doctorate in theology in 1822. In 1823 he became the bishop's secretary on September 10, 1824, a member of the cathedral chapter of Großwardein.

By imperial decree of March 17, 1854, Alexandru Dobra was appointed the first bishop of the newly created diocese of Lugoj and Ioan Alexi the first bishop of the newly created diocese of Gherla, Armenopoli, Szamos-Ujvár . Pope Pius IX confirmed the appointments on November 16, 1854. On October 28, 1855 she was ordained bishop in the Cathedral of Blaj by Alexandru Sterca Șuluțiu de Kerpenyes , Archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia . Co- consecrators were Vasile Erdely , Bishop of Oradea, and Bishop Angelo Parsi , Vicar Apostolic of Wallachia . The installation in his diocese took place on September 21, 1856 in the Cathedral of Lugoj, in the presence of the Bishop of Oradea Mare (Oradea) Vasile Erdely, the Roman Catholic Bishops of Alba Iulia , Miklós Kovács and of Csanád , based in Timisoara , Alexander Csajághy and Johann Baptist Coronini-Cronberg held the Governor of the Voivodeship of Serbia and the Temesian Banat .

Alexandru Dobra ordered the parishes, had churches built, organized the administration, built schools and encouraged young people to study theology. He was also politically active and was appointed to the State Council in 1868. He was papal assistant to the throne , Roman count (Conte Romano) and knight of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

Increasingly weakened, he took part in the service for the last time on Sunday, April 10th, 1870 and died on Wednesday, April 13th, 1870 at the age of 77 after 52 years as a priest and 16 years as Bishop of Lugoj.
